Urban regeneration is not a want or a luxury, its a necessity for a soon to be megacity by 2030 boasting over 158 000 people a day moving into Pretoria alone, we need to evolve the way we think about the human race.
Urban agriculture, throughout the world, is undergoing transformation in response to political, economic, environmental, and technological changes. Rapid urbanisation meant that the number of urban residents particularly urban poor had to find ways of sustaining themselves.
“ Global economies have generally grown by shifting human and capital resources out of the primary sectors (e.g. agriculture and mining) first into the industrial sector and later into the services sector (Alexandratos, 1995)”
COLLABORATIVE COMPANY
New Native Agriculture is a collaboration focused around its farmers and the network of partners. New Native Agriculture focus is to build out the infrastructure to support the farmers and arrange partnerships for technical assistance where needed on specific skills. Through this structure, the goal is for community-led decisions that will employ local residents, provide opportunities, and grow the technical and entrepreneurial skills of both the organisation and the individual farm enterprises who will be able to benefit from shared resources, but have the flexibility to make their own decisions on crops, scale, and the types of markets they want to serve.
The farms will help transform the Inner Tshwane City from a food desert to a hub of local food production and a driver of economic and community development, eventually connected to other economic drivers, businesses, and community institutions.
